Now that is a BIG question to ponder over. Most people find difficult to answer or…
Have never been asked and therefore, have never taken the time to think about it.
Success means different things to each and every one of us. Why? Because we all have our own unique DNA, with different aspirations, goals and ambitions of what we want to achieve in life.
The key though is to make sure you have a clear definition of what success means to YOU.
This doesn’t mean success as defined by your parents, partner boss or society – all these can have an impact and influence over your definition – however, it has to be YOUR definition, your vision and your purpose.
No one else is living your life for you – it’s about being in the driver’s seat of your life, with a clear focus on WHERE it is you want to go and WHO and WHAT you want to become on the journey.
After all – you either create your own picture, model, definition of success or you simply become a pawn or piece of the jigsaw in someone else’s picture!
Block out some quiet time and really think about your definition of success. To help you out with the process, it is perhaps easier to break the question down into two parts;
Part 1: What does Success mean to you personally?
Part 2: What does Success mean to you professionally?
Very few people have a clear definition for each of these and even more importantly…even fewer people who have thought about whether the two definitions are aligned and feeding each other or are in conflict and tension.
That leads to Part 3 and the final question of this exercise;
Are your two definitions aligned and complementing each other or are they in conflict and tension?
When you are really clear about what success means to you, both personally and professionally, you can design your life, fully aware of the tensions and trade-offs you’re making.
