How important is leadership capability to your business and how do you develop your leaders and managers?

Having spent two decades working with organisations, leaders and managers globally, in both the Public and Private sector, there is undoubtedly ONE differentiating factor in those organisations that are not just surviving, but thriving.

That differentiating factor is the breadth and depth of leadership capability.

Why is Leadership Capability so important?

43% of UK managers rate their own line manager as ineffective – and only one in five are qualified. (Department for Business & Innovation).

Today’s workforce is multi-generational and managing the four generations of individuals means one style of leadership does not fit all. Leading and managing in harmony the Baby Boomers (1946 – 1964), Generation X (1965 – 1976), Generation Y, also known as the Millennials (1977 – 1995) and Generation Z (1996 – 2015) (, can be hit or miss unless your leaders know how to get the best from each individual.

Today’s leaders and managers need to be purposeful in the way they think, feel and act. The leader is the HERO in the story.

They need to be enabled with the freedom to take control and the resources they need to be able to be courageous, make decisions and challenge the status quo to drive the business forward.

Being a great leader of others starts with looking in the mirror and being a great leader of self..the inner game of leadership and being able to articulate the answer to questions like; ‘Why should anyone be led by YOU?’

Great leaders recognise that their people will only ever be a reflection of them – aptly captured in the expression the aircrew use when doing the safety demonstration prior to taking off…

Being a great business leader means having a clear understanding of how you can build high performing teams, a customer-focused organisation and lead a strategic business/cultural change agenda.

You need to be clear on the business WHY, what you are trying to achieve, and how you intend to deliver it.


Being a great leader of others means you understand that in order to achieve the business goals, unlocking people potential is a critical success factor. You understand what makes people tick, you give inspirational and developmental feedback, have great performance conversations and celebrate success.
